Gregory A. Nott Named "Lawyer of the Year" by Legal Business
(London, February 12, 2010) — Gregory A. Nott, Managing Partner of Dewey & LeBoeuf in Johannesburg, has been awarded "Lawyer of the Year" at the Legal Business Awards 2010, which took place on the evening of February 11 2010 in a gala ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.
The global award "recognizes a truly exceptional individual contribution to the profession during the course of 2009." Greg Nott was singled out for his ongoing pro bono legal work for South African world champion athlete Caster Semenya, for the development of the firm's South Africa practice, and for his demonstrable commitment to pro bono and human rights.
"Whilst the nomination came as a complete surprise to me, to win the award itself is amazing, and incredibly humbling," Greg Nott said. "The ongoing pro bono representation of Caster Semenya is the most important thing here. It remains a great honor to advise on the protection of her rights as a wonderful human and a world champion athlete, and to work on this with such a talented group of South African and international colleagues. Law can be a force for good in the world, for justice, access and for progress – South Africans know that more than most."
The accolade is one of the most prestigious in the legal world. Along with Greg Nott, those also shortlisted comprised Edward Fitzgerald QC and senior lawyers from Slaughter and May, Lovells, Baring Asset Management and the Financial Services Authority.
Among more than 900 attendees at the ceremony were lawyers representing many of the world's best law firms as well as in-house counsel from major corporations.
Steven H. Davis, Chairman of Dewey & LeBoeuf, said: "My congratulations to Greg. It is a great moment for him and also for all of the Dewey & LeBoeuf lawyers based in South Africa, as well as those around the world who regularly work within the African continent, as we all continue in our goal of becoming one of the world's best and most responsible global law firms."
