SAICA is working with CA Connect, a Cape Town-based educational venture run by CAs(SA). CA Connect provides teaching and mentorship to students at various levels on the path to becoming CAs (SA).
Its philosophy is that qualifying as a CA(SA), despite being technically demanding, is a personal growth process and involves far more than simply academic excellence.
Lwando Bantom SAICA’s Project Director of Transformation and Growth in the Western Cape says, “There is a need for a programme of this nature, because compared to residential universities; the pass rate for students who study their BCompt Honours (CTA) through UNISA is very low. The programme is rigorous and demands a high level of commitment from students in order to develop their technical knowledge to the level required to become a chartered accountant.”
There are numerous reasons that CA Connect and SAICA believe the pass rate to be this low, the two primary reasons being that:
- Most UNISA CTA students do not study on a full-time basis and have numerous commitments in addition to studying; and
- The UNISA CTA is a distance course in which students have very little contact time with lecturers.
This programme was developed to solve the above problems and to increase the UNISA CTA pass rate.
The support programme goes further than assisting students to pass their CTA. It also prepares them for the part 1 of SAICA’s Qualifying Exam (QE 1) as this is one of the most significant hurdles in qualifying as a CA(SA).
The BCompt Honours support programme caters for a maximum of 120 students. “The aim is to keep the programme small and manageable in order to give students the necessary hands-on and personal attention,” says Bantom.
The programme features:
- Four lectures and four tutorials a week;
- Continuous monitoring and feedback;
- Exam and study technique support;
- Small groups facilitated by full-time CAs(SA);
- Operation outside of business hours; and
- Additional notes, slides and practice questions.
The course will be run from the newly refurbished Old Mutual Business School in Pinelands, Cape Town.
